What Can I Do with an Individualized Minor in University Studies?
If you have 60 or more units of earned college-level coursework and obtain the recommendation of an advisor, you can complete a degree that provides the flexibility to change direction and build upon prior educational experiences in multiple disciplines. This degree will provide you with rigorous study in two areas - you will complete two minors - and focused preparation for your career path.
Note: If you want to major in University Studies, you must have 60 units of university coursework successfully completed or in progress. You must also apply through the Gateway Student Success Center to be accepted into the program.
Career opportunities that might be pursued:
- Museum work
- Writing/editing (grant-writing, journalism, publishing)
- Program administration (non-profits, corporate, NGO)
With further education, one of these paths is possible:
A minor is earned in conjunction with a bachelor's degree.
To receive a minor (18 to 24 units) at Northern Arizona University, you must complete a planned group of courses from one or more subject matter areas with a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0. At least 12 units of the minor must be unique to that minor and not applied to any other minor.
In addition to University Requirements:
- Complete individual plan requirements.
Please note that you may be able to use some courses to meet more than one requirement. Contact your advisor for details.

Additional Admission Requirements
- Admission requirements over and above admission to NAU are required.
The option of an individualized minor is available only for students admitted into the BUS plan. A faculty supervisor is assigned in consultation with the advisor. The minor plan is developed with faculty supervision and must be approved by the faculty supervisor, the BUS Faculty Steering Committee, and the BUS academic administrator (Vice Provost for Academic Affairs or designee).
Take the following 18 units with a minimum GPA of 2.0:
- 9 units must be upper-division courses
- Courses cannot overlap with the other minor taken to meet the BUS requirements or with the Liberal Studies distribution requirements, and cannot utilize developmental, PES, NAU, MS, or AS courses
Be aware that some courses may have prerequisites that you must also take. For prerequisite information click on the course or see your advisor.
