2012-2013

Civil Engineering, Bachelor of Science in Engineering

Department of Civil Engineering, Construction Management, and Environmental Engineering

College of Engineering, Forestry, and Natural Sciences

This program provides a strong foundation in engineering and design, with emphasis in structural, geotechnical, water resources and transportation engineering. Students graduating from this program can design solutions to complex problems with society’s infrastructure systems, and are prepared to become registered professional engineers specializing in civil engineering in their future careers.

This program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). (ABET / EAC).

This plan will not be available to new students after Summer 2018

  • To receive a bachelor's degree at Northern Arizona University, you must complete at least 120 units of credit that minimally includes a major, the liberal studies requirements, and university requirements as listed below.

You may also use prerequisites or transfer credits as electives if they weren't used to meet major, minor, or liberal studies requirements.

Additional Information
  • Undergraduate Civil Engineering students will:
    • Possess a foundation of mathematical and scientific principles in calculus through differential equations, statistics, calculus-based physics, and general chemistry. (ABET Criterion 3 Outcomes a, b, e, j and k, and Civil Engineering Program Criteria on Curriculum)
    • Define and solve engineering problems, and create, evaluate, and document engineering designs of systems or components. (ABET Criterion 3 Outcomes a, c, e, g, and h, and Civil Engineering Program Criteria on Curriculum)
    • Properly apply tools and methodologies to design and conduct experiments, to model or simulate processes and phenomena, and to analyze, interpret, and report results. (ABET Criterion 3 Outcomes a, b ,g, and k, and Civil Engineering Program Criteria on Curriculum)
    • Work successfully and communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with diverse and multi-disciplinary teams and as individuals in public and private organizations, understanding the impact of societal and political systems on the engineering design process. (ABET Criterion 3 Outcomes c, d, g, h, and j)
    • Strive to improve their professional skills and abilities and to update their knowledge and understanding of contemporary professional issues. (ABET Criterion 3 Outcomes c, f, h, i, j, and k, and Civil Engineering Program Criteria on Curriculum)
    • Recognize the practice of engineering as a privilege and adhere to the standards and ethics of the profession, including licensure requirements, to protect and promote public health, safety, and welfare. (ABET Criterion 3 Outcomes f and i and Civil Engineering Program Criteria on Curriculum)
You may not have more than one grade of "D" in your required engineering, mathematics, and science courses.; In addition, all prerequisite courses for your engineering courses must be completed with grades of "C" or better.

  • Be aware that some courses may have prerequisites that you must also successfully complete. For prerequisite information, click on the course or see your advisor.
