Do you enjoy working with young children?  An ever-growing body of research emphasizes the importance of developmentally appropriate, challenging, joyful learning experiences in early childhood education classrooms.  Nationally and throughout the state, there is an increasing focus on the recruitment of highly qualified early childhood education teachers.  The coursework and field experiences of the minor in early childhood education have been designed for you to gain the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to become a successful early childhood professional.  When taken in conjunction with the BSED, Elementary Education - Yuma, the coursework leads to Arizona state licensure and certification in Elementary Education and the endorsement in Early Childhood Education. If you have ever dreamed of teaching young children, this minor will enable you to make a positive and lasting difference while engaged in one of the most rewarding jos in the world.

  • A minor is earned in conjunction with a bachelor's degree.

    To receive a minor (18 - 24 units) at Northern Arizona University, you must complete a planned group of courses from one or more subject matter areas with a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0. At least 12 units of the minor must be unique to that minor and not applied to any other minor.

In addition to University Requirements:

  • Complete individual plan requirements.

Students may be able to use some courses to meet more than one requirement. Contact your advisor for details.

No more than fifty percent of the units used to satisfy minor requirements may be used to satisfy major requirements.

Minor Requirements
  • Take the following 22 - 24 units with a cumulative minimum GPA of 2.5 and a Grade of "C" or better in each course:


    Please be aware that as part of the BSED, Elementary Education - Yuma degree, and in order to qualify for teacher certification, you are required to do 12 units of student teaching. To meet ADE requirements for both the Elementary Education certification and the Early Childhood Education endorsement, students who take the ECE minor will enroll in the following courses for the BSED, Elementary Education - Yuma student teaching field experience:
