Engineering - Mechanical Engineering, Master of Engineering

The Master of Engineering (MEng) with an emphasis in Mechanical Engineering is a non-thesis professional degree that will help you advance your career objectives. We offer two specializations in Mechanical Engineering:  Thermal-Fluid Sciences and Solid Mechanics.


What Can I Do with a Master of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering?

As you probably know already, Mechanical Engineering is a broad field that is vital to many industries. Applying mathematics and physics to design, analyze and build mechanical components and systems like automobiles, power plants, robots, and spacecraft are just some of the applications of this degree. Our program prepares you for professional practice with a broad, applied education across two specializations in Mechanical Engineering: thermal-fluid sciences and solid mechanics. You will have the opportunity to enhance and/or develop the skills, knowledge, and understanding that are critical to today’s practicing engineers.

With further education, one of these paths is possible:
  • Aerospace engineer
  • Sustainability engineer
  • Engineering consultant
  • Field engineer

University Requirements

  • To receive a master’s degree at Northern Arizona University, you must complete a planned group of courses from one or more subject areas, consisting of at least 30 units of graduate-level courses. (Many master’s degree programs require more than 30 units.)

    You must additionally complete:

    • All requirements for your specific academic plan(s). This may include a thesis.
    • All graduate work with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0.
    • All work toward the master’s degree must be completed within six consecutive years. The six years begins with the semester and year of admission to the program.

Research Individualized research may be required by chosen emphasis or offered as an option.

  • Admission requirements over and above admission to NAU are required.
Master's Requirements
  • Take the following 30 units:
    • Coursework in applied mathematics, in a relevant topic such as linear algebra, partial differential equations, or applied mathematics modeling (3 units)
    • Coursework in engineering management (course may be offered through such programs as Engineering, Business, or Management) (3 units)
    • Coursework in engineering computational techniques, in a course such as ME 510 or MAT 563 (3 units)
    • Coursework in mechanical engineering with your advisory committee's approval. Up to 6 units outside of mechanical engineering, in a related engineering or interdisciplinary field, are allowed here. (15 units)
    • Additional courses from mechanical engineering or related areas, with your advisory committee's approval. This can include up to 6 units in an optional practice-oriented project, developed and conducted under your advisory committee's guidance and focused on a problem of interest to the practicing engineering community. (6 units)
  • Be aware that some courses may have prerequisites that you must also take. For prerequisite information click on the course or see your advisor.

  • Program fees are established by the Arizona Board of Regents (ABOR). A program fee of $402 per credit hour for distance-delivered courses has been approved for this program.
