English, Minor

This flexible minor, with many approved electives, allows students to follow their love of English into the realms of literature, rhetoric, linguistics, or creative writing. The departmental portfolio of coursework is ripe with possibilities for individual interests, including technical writing, poetry, film as literature, folklore, or women writers.

What Can I Do with a Minor in English?

The study of English is more than just literature. Critical reading skills are crucial in any job, and writing skills are in demand from employers in many fields. A minor in English is a valuable addition to any major that requires excellent writing. An English background will also prepare you for graduate study; rhetorical skills are a must in the law profession, and communication skills are vital in fields like counseling and advertising.

University Requirements

  • A minor is earned in conjunction with a bachelor's degree.

    To receive a minor (18 to 24 units) at Northern Arizona University, you must complete a planned group of courses from one or more subject matter areas with a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0. At least 12 units of the minor must be unique to that minor and not applied to any other minor.

Minor Requirements
  • Select 300-level coursework (6 units)
    Select 400-level coursework, with at least one designated seminar course (6 units)

    At least 12 units of this minor must be taken at NAU.

  • Before graduating, you must complete two 3-unit courses, one in ethnic diversity and one in global awareness. You may be able to use English courses to fulfill Northern Arizona University's diversity requirements and requirements for this minor. Please use the course search in the academic catalog for a list of approved diversity courses.
