A minor will give you a broad understanding of Mechanical Engineering that you can use in your future career or to apply to other disciplines. This minor is designed for other engineering majors or other plans that emphasize math and science and provides Mechanical Engineering fundamentals with an emphasis in solid mechanics or the thermal-fluid sciences.

  • A minor is earned in conjunction with a bachelor's degree.

    To receive a minor (18 - 24 units) at Northern Arizona University, you must complete a planned group of courses from one or more subject matter areas with a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0. At least 12 units of the minor must be unique to that minor and not applied to any other minor.

In addition to University Requirements:

  • Complete individual plan requirements.

Students may be able to use some courses to meet more than one requirement. Contact your advisor for details.

No more than fifty percent of the units used to satisfy minor requirements may be used to satisfy major requirements.

Purpose Statement

Our minor is designed for students majoring in other disciplines who desire exposure to the theory and practice of Mechanical Engineering.  It provides a firm foundation in solid and fluid mechanics, engineering design, dynamics, thermodynamics, and mechanics of materials.  Increasingly, scientists, engineers, and other related professionals are required to work together in multidisciplinary environments to solve common problems.  A minor will give students a broad understanding of Mechanical Engineering that they can use in their future careers and will complement degree programs such as Biology, Physics, Environmental Sciences, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, and Computer Science.

Student Learning Outcomes

The Mechanical Engineering (ME) minor learning outcomes are a subset of the learning outcomes for the BSE in ME.  By the time they complete a minor in ME, students will have achieved an ability to:

  1. Apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering
  2. Function on multi-disciplinary teams
  3. Identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems
  4. Communicate effectively
  5. Recognize the need for, and an ability to, engage in life-long learning
  6. Develop knowledge of contemporary issues
  7. Use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice
