Nursing - Accelerated Option, Bachelor of Science in Nursing

You are eligible for this option if you already have earned a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college or university. After completing this intensive 12 month plan, you are eligible to take the national licensing exam for registered nurses (NLCEX-RN)

This program is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).

What Can I Do with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, in Nursing - Accelerated Option?

This program is designed for students who have already completed a bachelor's degree. The program has been developed to provide an intensive, year-round accelerated program of learning.

The high-tech world of health care will always be driven by the human heart. If a gifted nurse has helped you, you know that one person truly can make a difference. What you may not know is that nurses outnumber all other health care practitioners. And the demand grows.

Our programs provide the tools you need for a successful nursing career. You can advance in dozens of directions. Our hands-on curriculum covers health maintenance, disease prevention, primary care assessment, and evidence-based research. We emphasize rural and urban health care needs in the culturally diverse Southwest.

Note: If you want to major in Nursing, you must apply and be accepted to the School of Nursing program in addition to being admitted to the university.

With further education, one of these paths is possible:
  • Nurse anesthetist
  • Infection control nurse
  • Nurse educator

University Requirements

  • To receive a bachelor's degree at Northern Arizona University, you must complete at least 120 units of credit that minimally includes a major, the liberal studies requirements, and university requirements as listed below.

    • All of Northern Arizona University's liberal studies, diversity, junior-level writing, and capstone requirements.
    • All requirements for your specific academic plan(s).
    • At least 30 units of upper-division courses, which may include transfer work.
    • At least 30 units of coursework taken through Northern Arizona University, of which at least 18 must be upper-division courses (300-level or above). This requirement is not met by credit-by-exam, retro-credits, transfer coursework, etc.
    • A cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0 on all work attempted at Northern Arizona University.

  • At least 27 units of preprofessional requirements
  • At least 52 units of professional requirements
Please note that because you already have a bachelor's degree, you are not required to meet Northern Arizona University's 35 units of liberal studies requirements.

Please note that you may be able to use some courses to meet more than one requirement. Contact your advisor for details.

  • Admission requirements over and above admission to NAU are required.
Major Requirements
General Electives
  • Additional coursework is required, if, after you have met the previously described requirements, you have not yet completed a total of 120 units of credit. 

    You may take these remaining courses from any academic areas, using these courses to pursue your specific interests and goals. We encourage you to consult with your advisor to select the courses that will be most advantageous to you. (Please note that you may also use prerequisites or transfer credits as electives if they weren't used to meet major, minor, or liberal studies requirements.)

  • PROGRAM FEE INFORMATION
  • Program fees are established by the Arizona Board of Regents (ABOR). A program fee of $1600 for the 12 month program has been approved for this program.
