This program allows students to pursue additional coursework in an academic area while strengthening their understanding of educational concepts. Students may choose to conclude this program with the research, writing, and oral defense of an approved thesis.

We offer programs leading to an M.Ed. in Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, or Secondary Education to enhance your teaching skills. These programs offer you advanced courses in teaching methods, curriculum, and related areas. We also have a program of study for the Reading Specialist Endorsement, which you may pursue separately or as part of a degree program.
To receive a master’s degree at Northern Arizona University, you must complete a planned group of courses from one or more subject areas, consisting of at least 30 units of graduate-level courses. Many master’s degree programs require more than 30 units.

Individual program admission requirements over and above admission to NAU are required.
The NAU graduate online application is required for all programs. Admission to many graduate programs is on a competitive basis, and programs may have higher standards than those established by the Graduate College.

Select courses in a content area commonly taught in the public schools or in endorsement courses in reading, special education, and technology (9 units).

Please note that if you choose the thesis option you may end up taking more than the 3 units of thesis credit you can count toward your degree because you must register for ECI 699 each semester while you are working on your thesis.
Also note that preparing a thesis generally requires one semester of residency, in Fall, Spring, or Summer.
Please note that at least fifty percent of your courses must be at the 600-level or above.
