HS 505 - Advanced Behavior Change Counseling

Description: This course provides advanced training in client-centered counseling techniques used in behavior change counseling with a variety of didactic and skill-building activities. The primary behavior-change counseling technique covered in this course is motivational interviewing. Motivational interviewing centers on evoking clients' ambivalent feelings about making a behavior change with the use of reflective listening, affirmations, and summaries to highlight clients' personal motivations and change strategies. Cross cultural counseling is highlighted with an emphasis on using client-centered techniques to explore cultural influences surrounding the behavior change process. This course reviews the basic tenants of motivational interviewing and opportunities are provided to practice these skills in and out of the classroom. Letter grade only.
