CLA 180 - Close Reading Of Classical Texts

Description: What makes something tragic rather than shocking or sad? What do we, the audience, gain from reading tragedies or seeing them performed? Should some stories not be told? Are tragic consequences a product of fate, freedom, or a collision of the two? To engage these and other questions, this course examines the theoretical underpinnings of tragedy while exploring the philosophical themes of freedom and fate. Letter grade only.
