Description: This course explores the 20th century emergence of "trauma" as a paradigm to understand the current situation and debates about art addressing past and present atrocities, memorial museums, public memorials, and cultural responses. Students study and discuss the relevant literature and selects representations of trauma in the humanities, art, and culture. The course is conducted in a seminar format and includes intensive in-class discussions of select texts, institutions, and visuals. Students will have the opportunity to read critically and discuss historical, cultural, and ethical frameworks associated with the phenomenon of trauma. Letter grade only.
