CS 404 - Open Source Software Development

Description: This course introduces students to the principles and practices of Open Source Software (OSS) development. Students learn the history, philosophy, and ecosystem of open source, as well as the technical and social processes that enable large-scale, distributed collaboration. Topics include version control systems, issue tracking, code review, licensing, governance models, and community participation. A major component of the course involves hands-on contribution to real open source projects, allowing students to engage with existing codebases and developer communities. By the end of the course, students will have practical experience setting up, managing, and contributing to OSS projects, and will understand the professional, ethical, and collaborative dimensions of open source development. Letter grade only.
