Program Information

PROGRAM INFORMATION

This plan prepares students for a career in advertising or a related profession by blending a theoretical base and practical experience. The broad objective of this plan is to provide you with instruction, guidance, and a professional perspective in advertising and its related fields. We teach advertising in the broader context of a communication channel for marketing activity, which includes creative strategy development, media planning, target audience identification, copy and layout design, and campaign development.

We offer you an integrated approach to communication and require that you complete courses in advertising, communication, and journalism. We assign individual and team projects and offer you direct c  contact with leading advertisers in our senior-level courses.

Some courses in your major may have prerequisites that you must complete before taking required courses. Courses for your major are offered in specific sequence and you must complete the communication core and required prerequisite courses in sequence. Failure to take courses in sequence may delay completion of your plan. You should also be aware that you may take ADV 408 in your final two years before graduation; however, you must apply to and receive prior approval from our advertising faculty members. We reserve the right to deny approval based on our assessment of your preparation and competence.

You must earn a grade of  “C” or better in the School of Communication Core (COM 101 and COM 200), Freshman Composition (ENG 105) and Liberal Studies Mathematics Foundation Course. You must earn a “C” or better in all courses required for the Bachelor of Science in Advertising and maintain a GPA of 2.5 or better in these courses to complete this degree.

BE AWARE THAT THE FINAL RESPONSIBILITY OF SELECTING COURSES RESTS WITH YOU. IT IS YOUR FULL RESPONSIBILITY TO MEET THE REQUIREMENTS OF YOUR INTENDED DEGREE, IN THEIR PROPER SEQUENCE, SO YOU DON’T FIND YOURSELF IN YOUR SENIOR YEAR INELIGIBLE FOR GRADUATION.

General Information

Progression Plans are intended to provide a general road map related to the sequencing of courses.

For a full description of degree requirements, review the university catalog.  To determine what requirements you may have already met through transfer credits, AP/IB courses, or test credits review your degree progress report.

Some courses may have pre-requisites and/or require appropriate placement scores in Mathematics and English.  If you do not have the appropriate placement or pre-requisite courses, you may have to take more courses than are presented on the Progression Plan.

Not all classes are offered every term so use caution when changing the sequencing of courses.

For further clarification, refer to the catalog (link provided at the top of this page) or speak with an academic advisor.
