Program Information
PROGRAM INFORMATION
NAU's program in criminology and criminal justice is designed to provide you with a social science education concerning the nature of crime and the purpose, operations, and consequences of the various components of the justice system in both the United States and other nations.
If you are interested in pursuing a career in one of the three major areas of the criminal justice system (the courts, corrections, or law enforcement) or if you wish to pursue further education in law school or graduate school, the B.S. in criminal justice will provide you with the knowledge and analytical skills to do so.
Whether you major in criminal justice or in some other field, our department can also contribute to your ability to make informed judgments about crime and justice issues through our liberal studies offerings.
You may use individualized coursework (up to 6 units) toward your criminology and criminal justice degree with the following conditions. You must consult with your criminology and criminal justice advisor before choosing individualized courses. You must use only individualized coursework with a CCJ prefix. Any such coursework counts toward the 6 unit maximum for individualized coursework. If you take more than 6 units of individualized coursework the additional units will count as general elective credit.
You may design a track in criminology and criminal justice coursework specific to your career goals. Please see the major work sheet for suggested tracks. It is strongly recommended that you speak to an academic advisor early in your academic career if you wish to design a track.
You must have a “C” or better in all criminology and criminal justice courses used to complete the major requirements. You may apply up to 15 units of criminology and criminal justice or related coursework taken at other institutions toward your Criminology and Criminal Justice degree at NAU.

General Information
Progression Plans are intended to provide a general road map related to the sequencing of courses.
For a full description of degree requirements, review the university catalog. To determine what requirements you may have already met through transfer credits, AP/IB courses, or test credits review your degree progress report.
Some courses may have pre-requisites and/or require appropriate placement scores in Mathematics and English. If you do not have the appropriate placement or pre-requisite courses, you may have to take more courses than are presented on the Progression Plan.
Not all classes are offered every term so use caution when changing the sequencing of courses.
