Program Information
PROGRAM INFORMATION
The Women's and Gender Studies Program at Northern Arizona University is interdisciplinary, with a particular focus on gender and the Colorado Plateau, US ethnic and indigenous women, and transnational feminisms. You are strongly encouraged to develop a thematic specialization within women’s and gender studies, the nucleus of which is drawn from the women's and gender studies area requirements. Your specialization can assist you in career, service, and graduate school placements.
Through this academic plan, you develop critical and independent thinking, reading, and writing skills by evaluating cross-disciplinary, multi-ethnic, and international scholarship on women's lives; sex and gender roles and identities; and feminist histories, theories, and methodologies. This plan also helps you to discover how race, class, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, and age shape gender identity and to understand gender as a category of analysis in the context of many disciplines and their methodologies.
Specializations can include feminist theory and practice; feminist methodology; race and feminism; image, representation, and feminism; the history and practice of feminist activism; feminism, development, and globalization; feminism and sexuality; international feminism; women, community, and change; feminist narratives; and other such themes.
Please be aware that a grade of “D” will not count for major credit. Although a course in which the grade earned is a “D” does not have to be retaken, you must complete 42 units in the major with a grade of “C” or better in order to fulfill your plan degree requirements.

For a full description of degree requirements, review the university catalog. To determine what requirements you may have already met through transfer credits, AP/IB courses, or test credits review your degree progress report.
Some courses may have pre-requisites and/or require appropriate placement scores in Mathematics and English. If you do not have the appropriate placement or pre-requisite courses, you may have to take more courses than are presented on the Progression Plan.
Not all classes are offered every term so use caution when changing the sequencing of courses.
