Master's Requirements

• Take the following 34 - 38 units:
  
  Select 9 units from each of two of the following Content Emphasis blocks (18 units):

• • Analysis and Topology block
    • MAT 531, MAT 535, MAT 632, MAT 641, MAT 690 (when topic appropriate)
    • STA 673, STA 674

• • Algebra and Combinatorics block
    • MAT 511, MAT 516, MAT 526, MAT 612, MAT 618, MAT 690 (when topic appropriate)

• • Applied Mathematics and Dynamical Systems block
    • MAT 542, MAT 563, MAT 661, MAT 665, MAT 667, MAT 690 (when topic appropriate)

• • Actuarial and Financial Mathematics block
    • MAT 562, MAT 565, MAT 567, MAT 690 (when topic appropriate)

• If not taken within the Content Emphasis blocks, complete(0-6 units):
  • MAT 531, (MAT 511 or MAT 516)
  Complete the following (1 unit):
  • MAT 587

• COMPREHENSIVE EXAM or THESIS (Select One):

    Electives. Fulfill the remainder of your unit requirements, as dictated by your choice of Option A or Option B (below). With your advisor's guidance, choose from the following list of courses:

    Perform satisfactorily on a comprehensive final oral exam conducted by your advisory committee
    

• • • Option A - Additional Community-College Emphasis
      • Teach a minimum of 3 units of mathematics at the college level for 4 semesters, while concurrently enrolled in the MAT 608 (1 unit) during each of the 4 semesters.
      • This teaching requirement is normally satisfied by being a Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) for 4 semesters.
      • Complete: MAT 595 and MAT 596
      • Take 3-9 units from the above list of elective courses, so that your total units add up to at least 38 units.
      Option B - No Additional Community-College Emphasis
      • Take 9-15 units from the above list of elective courses, so that your total units add up to at least 34 units. Substitutions may be allowed by petition to the department's Graduate Operations Committee.

• • Thesis
    Electives. Selected with your advisor's guidance from the following (6-12 units):

    Substitutions may be allowed by petition to the department's Graduate Operations Committee.
    
    • MAT 699, for the research, writing, and oral defense of an approved thesis. Please note: You may end up taking more than the 6 units of thesis credit you can count toward your degree because you must register for it each semester while you are working on your thesis. (6 units)
    In addition, you must:
    
    • Have a mathematics faculty member serve as your thesis advisor
    • Get your research committee's approval of your specific thesis plan
    • Perform satisfactorily on an oral defense of the thesis conducted by your research committee
