To receive a master’s degree at Northern Arizona University, you must complete a planned group of courses from one or more subject areas, consisting of at least 30 units of graduate-level courses. Many master’s degree programs require more than 30 units.
You must additionally complete:- All requirements for your specific academic plan(s). This may include a thesis.
- All graduate work with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0.
- All work toward the master's degree must be completed within six consecutive years. The six years begins with the semester and year of admission to the program.

Master's Requirements

Take the following 37 units:
Select 9 units from each of two of the following Content Emphasis blocks (18 units):
- If not taken within the Content Emphasis blocks, select from (0-6 units): MAT 531, (MAT 511 or MAT 516)

Thesis
Select with your advisor's guidance from the following (6-12 units):- MAT 511, MAT 516, MAT 526, MAT 531, MAT 535, MAT 542, MAT 562, MAT 563, MAT 565, MAT 567, MAT 612, MAT 618, MAT 632, MAT 641, MAT 661, MAT 665, MAT 667, MAT 685, MAT 690, MAT 697
- STA 570, STA 571, STA 572, STA 574, STA 575, STA 673, STA 674, STA 675, STA 676, STA 685, and STA 697
- MAT 699, for the research, writing, and oral defense of an approved thesis. Please note: You may end up taking more than the 6 units of thesis credit you can count toward your degree because you must register for it each semester while you are working on your thesis. (6 units)
- Have a mathematics faculty member serve as your thesis advisor
- Get your research committee's approval of your specific thesis plan
- Perform satisfactorily on an oral defense of the thesis conducted by your research committee
