2020-2021

Electrical Engineering Technology, Bachelor of Science

School of Informatics, Computing and Cyber Systems

College of Engineering, Informatics, and Applied Sciences

NAU is accepting applications through a tailored application process. If you are interested in applying to the program, please contact Paul Bakke in the College of Engineering, Informatics and Applied Sciences at Paul.Bakke@nau.edu.

Electrical Engineering Technology (EET) is a branch of engineering technology that prepares graduates with the skills necessary to enter careers in the application, design, manufacture, and operation of electronic systems. Electrical Engineering Technology is distinguished from other branches of engineering technology by its emphasis on electronic systems, and from Electrical Engineering (EE) by its emphasis on applied techniques and knowledge over theory.

Flexibility is a hallmark of this online bachelor’s degree which offers all coursework online and accepts a significant amount of transfer credit. The pre-requisite training required by this program is fulfilled by completion of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s Reactor Operator License, or Senior Reactor Operator License, and is satisfied through transfer credit as identified in the major requirements.

This plan will not be available to new students after Summer 2021

  • To receive a bachelor's degree at Northern Arizona University, you must complete at least 120 units of credit that minimally includes a major, the liberal studies requirements, and university requirements as listed below.

    • All of Northern Arizona University's diversity, liberal studies, junior-level writing, and capstone requirements.
    • All requirements for your specific academic plan(s).
    • At least 30 units of upper-division courses, which may include transfer work.
    • At least 30 units of coursework taken through Northern Arizona University, of which at least 18 must be upper-division courses (300-level or above). This requirement is not met by credit-by-exam, retro-credits, transfer coursework, etc.
    • A cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0 on all work attempted at Northern Arizona University.

The full policy can be viewed here.

In addition to University Requirements:

Purpose Statement

The Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering Technology allows energy management professionals to advance their knowledge and skills by employing the strong professional training they receive from military experience and employment with APS and blending it into a bachelor’s degree pathway at NAU which covers a broad spectrum of electrical engineering technology topics, while providing in-depth expertise in power systems, power electronics, and electronics project management.

The pre-requisite training required by this program is fulfilled by completion of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s Reactor Operator License or the Senior Reactor Operator License.

The core of the program includes digital and analog electronics coursework and a design sequence that gives students multiple opportunities to engage in engineering design, teamwork, and creative problem solving.  Electives allow students to dive deeper into specific focus areas such as photovoltaic energy, wind power, and power electronics.  This core is supported by foundational math, computer science, and natural science coursework.

Students who get an EET degree have many career opportunities related to the power industry, electronics industry, and computer industry.  This degree includes significant leadership and management study and practice and prepares students for leadership positions in engineering teams.

Student Learning Outcomes

Student learning outcomes are aligned with the Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission (ETAC).  We anticipate that all emphases will be accredited under the ETAC under the “Electrical Engineering Technology” program criteria.  Student Learning Outcomes (SLO) for this degree program are:

  • An ability to apply knowledge, techniques, skills and modern tools of mathematics, science, engineering, and technology to solve broadly-defined engineering problems appropriate to the discipline.
  • An ability to design systems, components, or processes meeting specified needs for broadly-defined engineering problems appropriate to the discipline.
  • An ability to apply written, oral, and graphical communication in broadly-defined technical and non-technical environments; and an ability to identify and use appropriate technical literature.
  • An ability to conduct standard tests, measurements, and experiments and to analyze and interpret the results to improve processes.
  • An ability to function effectively as a member as well as a leader on technical teams.

Additional Admission Requirements
  • Individual program admission requirements over and above admission to NAU are required.

  • To be eligible for this academic plan, students must have completed one of the following licenses or training programs:

    United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission

    • Reactor Operator License
    • Senior Reactor Operator License

Major Requirements
  • This major requires 86-92 units distributed as follows:

    • Pre-admission requirements: (42-48 units)
      • U.S. NRC Reactor Operator License: 42 units, OR
      • U.S. NRC Senior Reactor Operator License: 48 units
    • Engineering Technology Requirements: 44 units

    Take the following (44 units):

    Engineering Technology Requirements
General Electives
  • Additional coursework is required if, after you have met the previously described requirements, you have not yet completed a total of 120 units of credit.

You may take these remaining courses from any of the academic areas, using these courses to pursue your specific interests and goals. You may also use prerequisites or transfer credits as electives if they weren't used to meet major, minor, or liberal studies requirements.

We encourage you to consult with your advisor to select the courses that will be most advantageous to you.

  • Be aware that some courses may have prerequisites that you must also successfully complete. For prerequisite information, click on the course or see your advisor.
