Purpose Statement

The purpose of the minor in Career and Technical Education, is to provide professional knowledge courses for those majoring in CTE related fields that provide students with occupation specific knowledge and skills. Students whose career goals include teaching/training their occupational area to others would benefit from completing a minor in CTE. The minor combines fundamental career and technical education theory with professional knowledge for developing and delivering occupational training in a variety of educational settings. Minor completers will have the knowledge and ability to plan, develop, deliver, and assess instruction in the occupational area of their major.  

Student Learning Outcomes

Demonstrate familiarity and understanding of foundations of Career and Technical Education.

• Demonstrate familiarity and understanding of the Career and Technical Education terminology and structure through appropriate use in written documents and oral presentations.
• Differentiate the functional, historical and philosophical structure and contexts of Career and Technical Education at the national and international levels.
• Examine the philosophical social, economic, and ethical considerations and consequences of Career and Technical Education’s role in American society; and identify how these consequences will impact their work in the profession. 

Demonstrate the ability to plan and develop instruction.

• Demonstrate ability to pre-assess prior knowledge to plan for effective instruction;
• Select materials, methods and resources to meet instructional goals;

 Demonstrate the ability to deliver and assess instruction.

• Demonstrate ability to employ a variety of teaching methods to effectively engage  learners;
• Evaluate learning, provide appropriate feedback to learners, and objectively judge effectiveness of content delivery methods;

 Demonstrate professional application of essential skills

• Demonstrate effective communication skills (written and oral) in  the planning, development, delivery and assessment of instruction;
• Evaluate and critique employability skills for application and integration into Career and Technical Education curriculum and programs;
• Model appropriate professional occupational conduct and ethics  though application in the planning, development, delivery and assessment of instruction;

 Demonstrate technological literacy

• Possess technological literacy to apply available technologies and investigate potential technology applications; 
• Appropriately integrate instructional technology; 

Demonstrate occupation specific knowledge and skills through coursework and the completion of an internship

 

Additional Admission Requirements

• Individual program admission requirements over and above admission to NAU are required.

• • Admission to this minor requires completion of at least 15 hours of coursework in a major that aligns with an occupation area.

  • Select one from (3 units):
    • CTE 455, CTE 431, CTE 486
  • Select one additional course from (3 units):
    • CTE 330, CTE 455, CTE 491, CTE 492, CTE 399, CTE 401, CTE 408, CTE 431, CTE 486, CTE 496, CTE 499, CTE 503, CTE 593
    • Internship credit from your major, or additional CTE 408 (3 units)
