We offer courses that meet the requirements for both Bilingual Education and ESL endorsements, and you can incorporate this coursework into your MEd plan in Bilingual and Multicultural Education. However, the MEd does not automatically lead to an endorsement.
After you have completed the appropriate courses, you can obtain the endorsement by applying directly to the Arizona Department of Education. Individuals who have the Arizona Bilingual Education Endorsement are also approved to teach English as a second language.
If you are interested in providing ESL instruction in public schools, you need either a bilingual or ESL endorsement. The ESL endorsement requires that you complete coursework, including foundations, ESL methods, linguistics, culture, and assessment of limited English proficiency (LEP) students. Studies will also require teaching reading and writing to LEPs, and a practicum in an NAU-approved ESL or bilingual setting at the appropriate grade level. This endorsement program can be embedded in the following degree programs: Elementary Education MEd or the Bilingual and Multicultural Education MEd .
Please be aware that to receive this endorsement, you must also be certified to teach elementary, secondary, or special education; the endorsement alone does not certify you to teach in Arizona.
