The Sports and Adventure Media Certificate Program provides students the opportunity to gain valuable hands-on experience in multiple media platforms while covering traditional and adventure sports in one of the nation's premier outdoor recreation destinations.
Careers in sports and adventure media are fast-paced and close to the action. Coursework in this certificate program equips students with the professional-level experience required to secure a job in the highly desirable and competitive field of sports and adventure media. Our NAU sports media students have won numerous national awards, and recent graduates have landed jobs at high-profile media outlets.
To receive an undergraduate certificate (at least 15 units) at Northern Arizona University, you must complete a planned group of courses from one or more subject matter areas with a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0.
Please be aware that federal financial aid is not available for some certificates, if the certificate is pursued and completed as a stand-alone certificate (i.e., not completed concurrently with a degree program). See the "Details" tab for additional information.

Purpose Statement
The Sports and Adventure Media Certificate Program provides students the opportunity to gain valuable hands-on experience in multiple media platforms while covering traditional and adventure sports in one of the nation's premier outdoor recreation destinations.
Students hone their skills working in a professional environment - anchoring and producing live sports segments for our award-winning local newscast, broadcasting live local sporting events, hosting sports talk radio shows and writing sports recaps and feature stories. Additionally, students engage in social media strategies, learn media management practices, and benefit from guest lectures delivered by sport media professionals. Students have the opportunity to cover local high school sports, NCAA Division I athletics, professional sports, and outdoor adventure sports amid some of the most pristine backdrops in the world.
Students involved in our Media Innovation Center sports classes have won numerous national awards, and recent graduate have landed jobs at high-profile media outlets. This success has been recognized on the national level, as the Media Innovation Center sports program was ranked 13th in the nation by the Broadcast Educators Association in Spring 2022.
This certificate will prepare students to enter the sports media field. Potential career opportunities include sports broadcaster, sportswriter, sports editor, sports director, sports producer, sports talk host, sideline reporter, social media specialist, and media relations specialist.
