Purpose Statement
The Spanish language is a valuable tool for commerce and cultural connections since it is the official language of 20 countries. In addition, Spanish is the most common second language in the world, and bilingual employees are required at many workplaces. In the United States, more people speak Spanish than in Spain. The U. S. Census Bureau projects the Hispanic/Latino population will double in the next fifty years. Thus, obtaining a Spanish for Business certificate will be a strategic asset and a business advantage for students regardless of their majors, as it will prepare them to communicate in Spanish and will meet the linguistic needs of a growing percentage of Hispanic/Latino customers.
Students completing this certificate will acquire aural, oral, speaking, writing, and presentation skills at different levels of proficiency (beginning, intermediate, and advanced). Activities in the required courses for this certificate will include listening to authentic materials, participating in conversations, reading authentic materials, writing with adequate accuracy, discussing cultural topics, and giving presentations. Activities will be in Spanish and will allow students to gradually improve their linguistic proficiencies.
This certificate prepares students to successfully manage several communicative tasks in straightforward social and business situations while using business terminology and understanding significant cultural traits of the Spanish-speaking world. It is expected that by completing this certificate, students become more linguistically and culturally proficient in the Spanish language and this will improve their career opportunities.
