What Can I Do with a Minor in Actuarial Science?

Actuary is consistently rated as one of the top professions, based on job satisfaction, pay, and other features. Actuaries typically enjoy challenges and problem solving. The work of an actuary involves the quantitative analysis of risk, and managing risk by analyzing the likelihood of future events, especially undesirable events, finding ways to reduce the likelihood of those events, and reducing the effects of undesirable events. Typical employers include companies in the insurance industry.

Note: If you want to minor in Actuarial Science, you must consult with one of the Mathematics and Statistics faculty members in addition to being admitted to the university.

University Requirements

  • A minor is earned in conjunction with a bachelor's degree.

    To receive a minor (18 to 24 units) at Northern Arizona University, you must complete a planned group of courses from one or more subject matter areas with a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0. At least 12 units of the minor must be unique to that minor and not applied to any other minor.

No more than 50% of the units used to satisfy minor requirements may be used to satisfy major requirements.

Minor Requirements
  • A Mathematics major may earn a Minor in Actuarial Science, but at least half the credits (essentially 12 units) in the minor must be courses that are not used to fulfill the student's Mathematics Major requirements.
