Independent Filmmaking, Minor

This plan will not be available to new students after Summer 2017

This Minor is a collaboration between the NAU School of Communication faculty and the Sedona Film School, which is a division of Yavapai College. Sedona Film School is housed in the Sedona Center for Arts and Technology, which is located in Sedona, Arizona (about 33 miles south of Flagstaff).

What Can I Do with a Minor in Independent Filmmaking?

Northern Arizona is in the process of reviewing the Sedona Film School and its offerings as course offerings are subject to change. If you have additional questions please contact the Director for the School of Communication.

A minor in independent filmmaking may provide the tools and opportunities to develop skills for critical aspects of filmmaking. This minor is designed as an intense experience with a working film school to deliver hands on experience to students. The minor requires courses taken through Yavapai College for a semester that will transfer to Northern Arizona University.

University Requirements

  • A minor is earned in conjunction with a bachelor's degree.

To receive a minor (18 to 24 units) at Northern Arizona University, you must complete a planned group of courses from one or more subject matter areas with a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0. At least 12 units of the minor must be unique to that minor and not applied to any other minor.

In addition to University Requirements:

Students take 15 required units at Sedona Film School, registering through Yavapai College. These 15 units will transfer to NAU as COM 201 (9 units) and COM 202 (6 units).

  • Note: This block of courses is offered only during Fall semester.
Students complete the remaining 6 units of this minor at NAU.

Please note that you may be able to use some courses to meet more than one requirement. Contact your advisor for details.
