Students in this minor focus on the foundations of military teamwork, leadership, management, and physical preparedness. They also develop communication and career planning skills and an understanding of command-and-staff functions.

  • A minor is earned in conjunction with a bachelor's degree.

    To receive a minor (18 - 24 units) at Northern Arizona University, you must complete a planned group of courses from one or more subject matter areas with a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0. At least 12 units of the minor must be unique to that minor and not applied to any other minor.

In addition to University Requirements:

  • Complete individual plan requirements.

Students may be able to use some courses to meet more than one requirement. Contact your advisor for details.

No more than fifty percent of the units used to satisfy minor requirements may be used to satisfy major requirements.

Purpose Statement

Students in this minor focus on the foundations of military teamwork, leadership, management, and physical preparedness. They also develop communication and career planning skills and an understanding of command-and-staff functions.
 
At NAU Lumberjack Battalion, you will learn firsthand what it takes to lead others, motivate groups, and develop your leadership potential. Freshman and sophomore level Military Science Courses are open to students who have the potential to become commissioned Army officers. Non-contracted students have no obligation of service to the Army.  Students participate in: Physical Training, Leadership Labs, Field Training Exercises, Instruction from experienced Army Officers and NCOs, and Mentorship by ROTC Cadet Leaders.

Student Learning Outcomes

  • Apply the training management process to develop short-, medium-, and long-term training plans based on unit mission essential tasks.
  • Communicate effectively in writing, orally, and in formal presentations.
  • Solve organizational, tactical, and ethical problems at the squad through battalion level effectively and ethically.
  • Apply counseling and mentoring to develop subordinates in their leadership and professional skills.
  • Understand and uphold the doctrinal, regulatory, and legal standards of the Army profession.
  • Physically, mentally, and emotionally prepared to survive and lead in high-stress environments.
  • Evaluate the history of the Army profession to improve professional judgment.
