Nursing - Option for Registered Nurses, Bachelor of Science in Nursing

• To receive a bachelor's degree at Northern Arizona University, you must complete at least 120 units of credit that minimally include a major, the liberal studies requirements, and university requirements as listed below.

  • All Northern Arizona University requirements.
  • All requirements for your specific academic plan(s).
  • At least 30 units of upper-division courses, which may include transfer work.
  • At least 30 units of coursework taken through Northern Arizona University, of which at least 18 must be upper-division courses (300-level or above). This requirement is not met by credit-by-exam, retro-credits, transfer coursework, etc.
  • A cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0 on all work attempted at Northern Arizona University.

In addition to University Requirements:

• At least 30 units of preprofessional requirements
• At least 30 units of major requirements
• Up to 9 units of major prefix courses may be used to satisfy Liberal Studies requirements; these same courses may also be used to satisfy major requirements
• Elective courses, if needed, to reach an overall total of at least 120 units

Additional Admission Requirements

• Individual program admission requirements over and above admission to NAU are required.

• • You must apply and be accepted to the School of Nursing's program in addition to being admitted to the university, as well as have a current RN nursing license.
  • You are eligible for this program option if you are a registered nurse who has graduated from a state, or nationally accredited, associate degree or diploma nursing program. Please note, if you are a diploma graduate, you need to contact an advisor to apply for 30 units of nursing credit.
  • Contact your local Extended Campuses' advisors for information about admission and transcript evaluation.

Associate Degree Transfer Block

• • RNs who earned their degree from an Arizona Community College may transfer up to 90 units toward the B.S.N. Other RNs should consult with a distance-learning advisor to determine transfer credits.

  • BIO 201, BIO 201L, BIO 202, BIO 202L, BIO 205, BIO 205L, BIO 320 (15 units)

  • PSY 101 and PSY 240 (6 units)
  • STA 270 or PSY 230 (3-4 units)

Major Requirements

• Upon completion of the preprofessional requirements and liberal studies requirements, the RN student will complete the following in the major for the B.S.N.

  • NUR 307, NUR 307L, NUR 320, NUR 321, NUR 330 (11 units)
  • NUR 390W (3 units)
  • NUR 420, NUR 424 (6 units)
  • NUR 442 (5 units)
  • NUR 450C (3 units)
  • NUR 452 (2 units)
  (Please note that NUR 390W meets NAU's junior level writing requirement, and NUR 450C meets NAU's senior capstone requirement).

General Electives

• Additional coursework is required if, after you have met the previously described requirements, you have not yet completed a total of 120 units of credit.

  You may take these remaining courses from any of the academic areas, using these courses to pursue your specific interests and goals. You may also use prerequisites or transfer credits as electives if they weren't used to meet major, minor, or liberal studies requirements.
