HIS 423 - History Of Southwest Tourism

Description: The American Southwest has a long history of tourism from its late 19th century heritage-focused beginnings as an antimodern escape for modernizing America to the 20th century recreational focus on hiking, river rafting, and mountain biking to post-industrial Las Vegas and Sedona and their foci on entertainment tourism and the New Age. The History of Southwest Tourism is a seminar course that incorporates readings with field work at tourist sites including the Grand Canyon, Grand Canyon Caverns and Route 66, and Sedona. Along the way, we will explore and interpret tourist landscapes, railroads and the tourism of hegemony, Native Americans and tourism, National Parks, corporate vs individual tourism, ecotourism, and the New Age. Co-convened with HIS 523. Letter grade only.
