Description: The purpose of this course is to gain a behavior analytic account of thinking, speaking, feeling, reading, writing, and other behaviors that are essential to consider when addressing behavior challenges. Basic verbal operants and the variables that make them more or less likely to occur will be examined along with instructional techniques for individuals who may not acquire vocal behavior through the everyday exposure to indirect contingencies of reinforcement arranged by a verbal community. Early Intensive Behavioral Interventions (EIBI) provides a context for teaching verbal behavior as well as other skills. Protocol for implementing structured and naturalistic ABA to teach skills will be covered, as well as the importance of imitation, generalization, maintenance, and self-management. Although most research on verbal behavior and EIBI has been conducted with young children with autism spectrum disorders, development of verbal behavior and strategies of instruction are relevant for individuals of any age, and at all developmental levels (including typically developing humans). Letter grade only.
