Description: This course explores the development of police departments, court systems, prisons and other state sites of incarceration, criminal law, and concepts of criminality in the United States from the 18th century to the present. The course explains how U.S. institutions of criminal justice were created and how those systems of power developed over time. It also explores how the meaning of "crime" and the concept of "criminality" in U.S. society shaped and was shaped by these institutions and by the intersections of race, class, gender, and sexuality. The course explores the origins of mass incarceration and militarized policing in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Letter grade only.
